Internet Central…
for the Roy & Prudence Hersey Graves family, that is. Some notes about this site (gravesfamily.org), which is basically a portal to what everyone is doing on the internet.
Once upon a time, way back in the dark ages (2001?), we started an email group at Yahoo groups. Then we decided to try a family website. We got a domain name and Marilyn set up a site. Her memory is shot, and it doesn’t really matter anyhow, but she thinks we started with a separate Expression Engine site, or it may have been set up originally as part of Spheremusic.
For some reason (see below; choose one or more), the original site did not draw much interest.
A. It was too hard to log in to the site.
B. It was too complicated.
C. Marilyn had to cut back and did not feel there was enough interest to continue.
D. What we really wanted was a [better] place to post photos & videos.
E. Everyone had their own favorite web app, and they were all different.
F. The internet evolved.
SO… we moved to myfamily.com, which offered an out-of-the box site with several more options. This site is still available, but it was not working out real well because (see above; choose one or more reasons).
SO… we downgraded that site. The old site and posts are still available at http://www.myfamily.com/site/legacy/ but you will now find advertising. You still need your old myfamily.com password (which also works for ancestry.com and the family tree there).
But Marilyn was really proud of her little calendar for birthdays & anniversaries, which, as it happens, was still at Spheremusic, and we still had our domain name, gravesfamily.org. If you want the birthday list, email marilyn for a low-tech version.
SO… Marilyn set up the site you are looking at right now and forwarded our domain name here so it will be easy to remember and get to. Now you will find links to all kinds of stuff that we have posted all over the place on the internet. This is called a portal. Let me know if you want to add a link to your site.
There is no longer private information on this site, so you don’t have to worry about logging in.
The torch has pretty much been passed to Kristy at Facebook and Paula for the gravesfamilyletter email, and you’re on your own.
See you in cyberspace—
love, marilyn
